Susan Hill's 'From The Heart' Book Review

Image
CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS  The first time I ever read a Susan Hill novel was back in 2010 whilst studying an access course at York college. We were introduced to her Gothic novel The Woman in Black in our literature class. As a lover of horror and ghost stories, I was surprised that I'd never heard of her or her work. Hill has fast become one of my favourite authors over the years. She has a way of merging characters so realistic they almost seem to come off the page, along with story lines, arcs and twists that you can't see coming, and which sometimes can floor you with sheer emotion, (especially if you're a book lover like me and extremely sensitive to fictional characters and their life stories 😉) So of course I was very excited to devour this most recent book by Hill. Though I've read a couple of her short stories in the past, I've mainly stuck to her more ghoulish work. Stories about possessed dolls, Victorian men who mess around with corpses s

Why I hate Christmas

Image
What's that? I'm a monster? How can I hate Christmas? Let me tell you now, I've got a list as long as my bloody arm as to why I hate Christmas. Maybe it's not so much Christmas I hate, more what it means nowadays. No-one really cares about the birth of Jesus anymore, especially when we live in a time of more atheists than religious people. No-one really cares about spending time with their families on the day, more what presents they got. In British culture it really is all about getting pissed and falling asleep in front of the T.V. Though, I suppose that's been the norm for decades. 🎅🎄 Unfortunately we now live in a world where Christmas means consumerism. Skinting ourselves every year to buy presents for the people that we love, even though we could show that in a million other ways without spending money. And what's worse, is we feel forced to buy presents for the relatives and friends that we don't really love, people we don't really ca

My Favourite Horror Movies

Image
You voted for it, and here it is! A list of my favourite horror movies. 👻 Like all of my lists, this is a bit of a mixed bag. And like most of my favourite things, I've loved horror since I was a kid. By the time I turned 7 I'd watched movies like Dracula, Hellraiser and Interview with the Vampire, though I was too young to understand what any of it meant. I just knew I loved the weirdness of them, the darkness, the terror of things that may or not come and get me in the night. Being scared is a thrill in itself, an adrenaline rush that I love getting. This is a list of the movies that I've loved long since after, and some of which I've seen so many times that I've lost count. But like a good book, I always come back to them. Whenever I'm feeling ghoulish, these movies are my go to. And it's not just because they're so good at freaking me out, rather I'm also in love with the stories, the characters, the cinematography. There are some s

Books that stole my heart

Image
As most of you know, I am a huge lover of books. As soon as I could read by myself, I would zoom through my books from school, wanting more and more to feed my imagination. As a kid, I had dozens of Jacqueline Wilson books (as did every other 11 year old girl I knew), dozens of Goosebumps books, and a general mish-mash of genres of fiction.Whenever I got bored of my own, or wanted something a little more challenging, I would dip into my mum's Stephen King collection. The very first King story I read was The Girl who loved Tom Gordon. I remember it not being all that scary or exciting, but the thrill of reading something so mature was enough for me to want to finish it. To this day I still get a thrill from reading. For me, it's the best escape. And so I've come to write this list. These are books which I've read that have pierced a hole through my heart, that have made me cry real tears, and which have made me want to hold the book to my chest once the story is o

What I've been up to in Witchcraft

Image
As you will know from my previous post, I have started dabbling within the realms of witch craft. I want to state again, that this is not an open opportunity for any of you to attack me, or question my morals or faith with regards to me working with an ancient and seriously misunderstood practice. I am a complete amateur, and am only doing this to help myself within meditation and surrounding myself with positive energies. 🔮🔮🔮 Now all of the slightly passive aggressive stuff is out of the way, (😉) I wanted to jot down here how I have been working Witchcraft into my every day life. I will document this with a few pictures of my personal trinkets and objects that help me with my rituals and meditation, and include my own tips that I've picked up.  I'm going to start from the very beginning. The great thing about Wicca and/or Witchcraft is that there are no set rules on how to do things. It is unique to the individual within question, and you can start any where y

An Ode to Witches

Image
Just a quick note before we get started, please read this blog post with an open mind. In no way am I trying to influence others to do what I'm writing about, and please don't throw shade at me for opening up about a seriously misunderstood practice. I am not a Satanist or a Devil worshipper, nor am I abandoning my own faith. This blog is purely for my own pleasure and I hope you will enjoy what I've written. Thank you for supporting my blog! 💜 Ever since I was a little girl, I have been terrified and fascinated by witches. The first witch I can ever remember being exposed to was the Wicked Witch of the West. She scared me to f***ing death. I would have nightmares about her face, cackling and hovering outside my window on her broomstick. I don't think I've met anyone who didn't agree that she was absolutely terrifying. Even writing about her gives me the chills. Then when I was around 6, I watched Hocus Pocus for the first time. I became obsessed and to
